Australia

The 1999 vintage proved challenging due to the vagaries of weather but the Australian wine industry weathered the storm with good vineyard management and well-timed harvests and surpassed the one million tonne mark for the first time. The Winemakers' Federation of Australia estimates a total intake for 1999 of 1,177,610 tonnes of grapes. The intake exceeds the 1998 crush of 975,674 tonnes by more than 20% and has more than doubled since 1991.

White Grape

SAUVIGNON BLANC

Fresh, dry and aromatic. Can have a grassy or gooseberry flavour. Often oak-aged and called Fume Blanc, which intensifies the flavour. Sometimes blended with Semillon for more complexity.

RIESLING

Fresh, aromatic and distinctly fruity. Floral and citrus bouquet, lots of fruit on the palate, yet enough acidty for a clean, dry finish. When prefixed with the terms 'Botrytis' or ' Late Picked', this signifies a sweet dessert wine.

SEMILLON

A broadly herbal, hay-like nose. Medium to full weight on the palate with a toasty/butterscotch flavour. A big, dry and often oaky style of wine. Also used to make very luscious sweet wines, when it takes on a honeyed/marmalade richness - intensely sweet, but not cloying.

CHARDONNAY

Rich, buttery nose - often so ripe you can smell tropical fruits. Full, rich flavour and texture, with greater depth from oak ageing.

MUSCAT

Light, aromatic and very grapey nose and flavour, with Fresh, clean finish. 'Late Picked' Muscats have a delicately sweet finish, but are not heavy dessert wines. 'Liqueur' Muscats are fortified, therefore much stronger in alcohol (18% proof +) and heavier in weight.

Red Grape

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

SHIRAZ

Deep plummy colouring. Rich, fruity and spicy nose. Full, rich palate with lots of fruit and spice - great depth of flavour, with a dry finish. Often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon to give a rich and more complex wine.

PINOT NOIR

Soft, velvety ruby red colour. Nose ranging from raspberry jam to vegetal. Light to medium weight with soft fruit flavours and texture. It has a dry finish.

MERLOT AND MALBEC

These two red varieties are often seen on labels which are Cabernet Sauvignon blends. Both have the effect of softening wine and make it enjoyable to consume while young.
