Eastern Region
THE EASTERN REGION
This region is bounded on the east by the entirety of Bulgaria's Black Sea
coast. It comprises about one quarter of the country's vineyards, and is made up
of three sub-regions.
THE NORTHERN COASTAL SUB-REGION
includes such towns as Tolbuhin, Kavarna
and Provadia. The overwhelming majority of wines from this area are white, and
they include varieties such as Chardonnay, Muscat, Sauvignon and Aligote, as
well as the indigenous Balkan vines such as Misket (a cross between Rhine
Riesling and Dimiat), Dimiat and Rkatsiteli.
The region enjoys long, warm
autumns which ripen the fruit to full maturity, retaining good levels of
acidity, producing dry and semi-dry whites notable for their fruitiness and
freshness. Sparkling wines also come from this sub-region. Controliran wines in
this region include "Varna Chardonnay"
THE CENTRAL SUB-REGION
is high and hilly; its summers are cooler than
those of the north. This mild climate, coupled with the excellent soil, have
combined over the years to yield some of Bulgaria's finest quality dry and
semi-dry white wines, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Johannisberg Riesling,
Dimiat and Gewurtz-traminer from Novi Pazar, Schumen and Preslav.
Bulgaria's
first brandy was made in this part of the country, and its production continues
to this day.
Controliran wines in this region include "Treasure of Kralevo,'
"Khan Krum Traminer", "Novi Pazar", "Chardonnay" and "Preslav Chardonnay"
THE SOUTHERN COASTAL SUB-REGION
includes Pomorie, Nessebar and, further
south, Bourgas among its towns. Overall, it is significantly warmer than the
other coastal areas, and the wines reflect this in their ripeness and
fruitiness. Again, most of the local varieties are white, mainly Misket, Muskat
Ottonel, Dimiat, Chardonnay, Ugni, Sauvignon and Aligote. Controliran wines in
this region include "Rose from the Southern Coast"

Sub Balkan Region
THE SUB BALKAN REGION
This region produces only a little of the
country's wine. It runs between the Balkan and Sredna Gora mountain ranges and
consists of two parts.
THE EAST SUB-BALKAN REGION
This region, effectively the Sungurlare valley,
grows mainly Misket from which light, white wines, best drunk young, are made.
So too are vermouth and other aperitifs. Controliran wines in this region
include "Sungurlare Misket"
THE WEST SUB-BALKAN REGION
Better known as the Valley of the Roses, this
region is the native land of the oleaginous rose from which the renowned Attar
of Roses is produced. The wineries spread around the towns of Karlovo and
Maslovetz, produce wines from Misket, Muskat, Kadarka and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Controliran wines in this region include "Misket from the Valley of Roses
(Rozova Dolina)"
UP
Southern Region
This is by far the biggest producer in Bulgaria, set on a bed of rich, dark
earth and enjoying plenty of rain when it matters most. The region, more than
two-thirds of whose wine is red, is divided into three parts.
THE SOUTHERN REGION : EAST
Produces large volumes of quality Cabernet
Sauvignon, with a little Merlot and Pinot Noir, and some Misket for white wine.
Notable production areas include Sliven and Korten, whose wines are ripe and
supple, and Oriachovitza, which produces fuller, heavier wines. Controliran
wines from the region include "Oriahovitza Cabernet Sauvignon" and Merlot"
THE SOUTHERN SUB-REGION
Renowned for excellent Merlot from Haskovo and, in
particular, Stambolovo. Also, in the south-east, is Sakar, whose Merlot and
"Mountain" Cabernet are solid, dense wines in need of quite long maturation.
Controliran wines from the region include "Sakar Merlot" and "Stambolovo Merlot"
THE CENTRAL & WESTERN SUB-REGION
This region is centred around
Plovdiv, Bulgaria's second city. The Cabernets here are remarkably soft and
supple, considering their ageing potential, while the indigenous Mavrud produces
much sturdier, tannic wine, capable of great complexity with age.
Merlot is
also produced in the region, whose most notable wineries include Perushtitza,
Assenovgrad and Sepremvri. Controliran wines from the region include
"Assenovgrad Mavrud" and "Wine from Brestnik"
UP
South West Region
Produces only a small proportion of Bulgaria's wine. This is a hotter, drier
region, next to the Greek border, and vegetation is up to a month ahead of the
rest of the country. Apart from the inevitable Cabernet, the local variety is
called "Broad Vine of Melnik ", normally abbreviated to Melnik, after the town
of the same name.
The red wine is said to be redolent of fresh tobacco leaf, and it ages very
well. Production is concentrated around Petrich, Damianitza and Harsovo.
Controliran wines from the region include "Harsovo Melnik "

Northern Region
35% of Bulgaria's
vineyards
The hilly northern region is threaded with
tributaries of the Danube, these form ideal sloping valley
sides which are planted with vines. The climate in this region
is temperate with brief mild and wet Springs and long hot
Summers.
The vineyards of Rousse and
Svischtov benefit from a slightly warmer climate due to warm
currents of air circulating from the Danube. The loam soils of
this region are granular with good water
permeability.
The northern region is home
to the indigenous Gamza grape. Quality Cabernet Sauvignons and
Merlots are produced throughout the region , the white wines
are particularly complimentary to the numerous fish dishes
which are the speciality of the northern.
